We have talked about how stories and narratives change in the medium of video games quite a lot here at CaPC. In this feature article from Paul Dean over at IGN, he offers interesting thoughts and quotations from some game-makers and storytellers in the industry. One video game writer admits, ”We’re sort of making it up as we go along.” I think a lot of us would agree that we on the editorial and critical side of video game writing often feel that we’re sort of making it up along the way as well.
I suppose it’s no surprise that Spike TV doesn’t put on a great award show — still it doesn’t get any less painful to watch things like this take place in the name of “gamers” (and no, I don’t mean Modern Warfare 3 winning — keep watching).
Yep, that’s right. They introduced a policy that anyone who goes long gets “teabagged” by an actor in a soldier outfit.
Anyway, there has been a lot of discussion about what, if anything, this means for the industry — probably not much. More than anything, it’s a missed opportunity and kind of embarrassing. Either way, here’s two rather thoughtful arguments, one on each side:
An Open Letter to The Spike TV VGAs:
I get it. You’ve got obligations. You have to appeal to a broad audience. Your references can’t be too niche or obscure. You have to keep people watching. You have to appease advertisers and wrangle exclusive deals out of game publishers. I don’t envy your jobs.
But after watching the 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards this Saturday night, I can’t help but wish you’d try a little bit harder not to embarrass the people you’re trying to entertain.

Or to put it yet another way, did you really think that a show put together by the production company that brought you shit like Survivor, The Apprentice, and Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? was going to offer you a quiet, introspective look at video games and the creative minds behind them? Did you really think that a show built in that way would ever air on Spike TV?
